Carrickfergus Castle and Museum
Carrickfergus is a coastal town situated in Co Antrim. It has a wonderful castle that is open to the public. Near the entrance is a modern building where you can try on different types of hats and costumes, see a model of the castle and learn more about the history of the castle. You can then go on a self-guided tour of the castle and even go up on some of the castle walls for a great view of the town and the sea. There is a small fee for entry to the castle.
There are also sometimes events at the castle. We were lucky enough on one of our trips to Northern Ireland to be able to go along to an archaeology event which was great fun.
Not far from the castle there is a small museum. This museum has a wide variety of artefacts and objects and tells the history of Carrickfergus. There are a couple of hands on things the kids can do – such as minting a coin. The museum is free.
