The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum
The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum is located in Holywood, Co Down. There are two museums, across the road from each other. On one side is the folk museum and on the other side is the transport museum. Both museums are quite interactive for kids and it is a great day out. In the transport museum kids can see all type of old vehicles from a penny farthing to a steam train while in the folk museum you can wander around an old town and go into some of the buildings to see what life was like in the past – you can visit the old post office, bank, school house, cottage, etc. In some of the buildings are people dressed in traditional costumes acting the part of the bank manager / postman, etc. This adds a whole new dimension to the experience and they are very knowledgeable and willing to chat and show you how things were done in the past. In the cottage we even got to taste freshly made potato bread made over the fire!
